Fireworks Illegal in National Forests
Last Updated (Wednesday, 31 December 1969 16:59) Written by Administrator Friday, 27 June 2008 16:55
July 4th holiday is approaching and the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest wants to remind forest visitors that fireworks are illegal on Forest lands.
“The use of fireworks on National Forest lands is a major concern for us. Fireworks of any kind are illegal on all National Forest lands”, said Mark Morris, Tonasket District Ranger. Ranger District personnel across the forest will be on the lookout for the illegal possession or use of fireworks in the forest. With the holiday being on a Friday this year, campgrounds are expected to be busy with a lot of day use recreationists. Visitors should be aware of the monetary penalties for those in possession of fireworks on the National Forest. Law breakers can be subject to a citation and a fine with the maximum penalty of $5,000 or up to 6 months in jail. “However, if a wildfire results from an individual’s use of fireworks, that person can be found liable for the cost of suppressing the fire. Suppression efforts are very costly, often running into hundreds of thousands of dollars and more” said Morris. Though many higher elevation areas of the Forest are retaining some moisture, lower elevation areas are drying out and are a concern. Celebrating our Nations independence is a day of fun. Please keep it that way by enjoying the day’s festivities in a safe and responsible manner. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy fireworks displays hosted in many local communities.

The Tonasket Ranger District Continues the Battle Against Invasive Species between May and September of this year, about 400 acres of noxious weeds will be treated using herbicide on lands cared for by the Tonasket Ranger District. Plans for managing weed control this year also include biological control and hand pulling. Employees will continue to inventory, survey and map other noxious weed locations. Emphasis this year will be placed on sites disturbed by the 2006 Tripod Fire Complex. Soil disturbance from the wildfire and suppression actions created conditions favorable for noxious weed establishment. “It can take two to three years for weeds to turn up on disturbed sites so it’s critical that we continue to monitor and control weeds on roads and disturbed sites within the 2006 Tripod fire area.” stated Carol Ogilvie, Noxious Weed Program Manager for Tonasket Ranger District.

Planned Power Outages Coming In July
Last Updated (Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:38) Written by Ferry County PUD Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:32
The Bonneville Power Administration has scheduled a PLANNED POWER OUTAGE for July 12th, from 11:00 pm until July 13th at 8:00 am and another one on July 20th, from 5:00 am until 3:00 pm.
This outage will affect every part of the Ferry County PUD service area EXCEPT Keller.
These outages are necessary in order for the BPA to replace some aging structures on the Sherman Pass feeder to Republic. These improvements will help to ensure that our system is reliable for many years to come.
The BPA has been replacing and repairing structures on this line for some time now without any disruption of service, but the nature of these last 5 structures is such that they can not be done unless the power is off.
Though we have worked with the BPA to schedule these outages at a time when they would cause the least amount of disruption, we understand that this will be an inconvenience. We thank you for your understanding, we will post more information soon.
Please call us at 509-775 3325 with any questions or concerns about this planned outage.
Spokane courier and shopping service launched in Republic

Inspired by the constantly rising price of gasoline, a Republic printing company has launched a courier and shopping service. With daily pickups in Spokane, plus weekly shopping at Costco Wholesale, Digital Documents hopes its “Sherman Express” courier service will save residents of Ferry County the time and expense associated with the long drive to the city.
“With gas and meals, a trip to Spokane easily costs $50 to $100 these days,” said Greg Sheffield, owner of Digital Documents, “It makes a lot of sense for local citizens and businesses to reduce these expenses by sharing their runs to the city. Hopefully people will find Sherman Express an easy and economical way to do that.” Digital Documents is a local printing firm which has operated in Republic since 2005 and recently opened a new office on Keller Street.
Weekly Costco shopping trips are on Thursdays. Customers may submit their shopping lists in person, or by phone, fax, email or website up to the evening before, then pick up groceries on Fridays at 771 South Keller Street in Republic. The greater of $15 or 10% of the Costco bill is charged to help cover expenses.
The company also makes weekday pickups anywhere between Spokane and Republic for $20, with a $5 discount on Thursdays. “Personally, to be most efficient I save up my errands and then make three or four stops in Spokane, including Costco, when I go. But I'd be happy to pay $45 for someone to make my three stops for me ... I spend more than that on gas,” Sheffield said. Pickups can be made at any store that will accept will call orders, such as Home Depot, Ziggy's, and Barnes & Noble.
The service seems to have struck a chord with local residents. “I've mentioned a number of times that 'what we need in Republic is a business where folks make a regular Costco run',” said local resident Diane Duranti. Sheffield agrees: “Officially our first shopping date is April 10, but word leaked out early that we would begin running to Spokane, so we've already made a couple of pickups and a Costco run, grabbing things like plants, coffee and laundry soap.”
For more information, interested persons should contact Sherman Express at 775-2425, or visit their website at www.shermanexpress.com.
